Earning high scores on AP tests can lead to valuable college credit and advanced placement—but credit depend on both the student’s performance and the specific policies of each college.
Your AP Exam Score
Most colleges require a score of 3, 4, or 5 to award credit, but many competitive schools require a 4 or 5.
The College’s AP Credit Policy
Each college sets its own rules about which AP subjects they accept and what scores they require. Some schools give course credit, while others allow you to skip introductory courses (called placement, not credit).
The AP Subject
Credit is more commonly awarded for math, science, history, and foreign languages. Some subjects (like AP Seminar or AP Research) may not be accepted everywhere.
Use the College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search Tool to check how a specific college handles AP scores.
